KFC, also known as Kentucky Fried Chicken, is no doubt one of the largest and most popular fast food chains in the world. The American brand is not only famous in the US, but has a strong following in other regions, too.
KFC started in 1930 as Sanders Court & Cafe (named after its creator “Colonel Sanders”), a fast food joint attached to a gas station. Over many decades, it has grown into one of the strongest fast food businesses in the world. The original recipe, one that has remained a secret since its creation, was not invented until 1940.
Indeed, KFC is a guilty pleasure. We know that as fast food, it’s bad, but we can’t help but gorge on its greasy goodness. Today, we list some rather reportedly disturbing facts about this fast food chain.
They’re incredibly serious about guarding their secret recipe.
KFC claims that it uses a secret blend of 11 herbs and spices for its original chicken recipe. BuzzFeed reports that a handwritten recipe with the exact details is locked in a vault at the chain’s corporate office in Louisville, Kentucky.
KFC had a creepy slogan when it ventured into China.
KFC’s slogan used to be “finger-liking good,” which they changed in 2011. The fast food business was also one of the first chains to venture into Asia. According to BuzzFeed, KFC did not correctly translate its slogan resulting in an erroneous tagline, “eat your fingers off.”
They changed their name to avoid saying “fried.”
KFC reportedly dropped the word “fried” to decrease the negative notion about their food. With the trend of healthy eating on the rise, the chain is said to have decided to downplay the term “fried.”
KFC founder was reported to be a bit of a troublemaker back in the day.
During his younger years, KFC founder Harland David Sanders was said to be a bit of a rebel. He left home at 13, and at 16 lied about his age to join the US army. He was allegedly fired twice in different jobs for engaging in fights.
Colonel Sanders was not really a colonel.
Although he did have a short stint in the US Army, Colonel Sanders was not an official military colonel. It was a title given to him in 1935 for being an outstanding Kentuckian.
Rumor has it that KFC stole from Wendy’s founder.
BuzzFeed reports that the KFC bucket design was originally made by Wendy’s founder Dave Thomas. Yahoo Voices reports, on the other hand, that the rumor is not true, attributing Pete Harman as the original designer of the KFC chicken bucket.
Some call KFC the “Kid Fattening Center.”
Some movements and groups that are unhappy about fast food consumption by children have called KFC as “Kid Fattening Center.” This is also perhaps one of the reasons why KFC decided to downplay “fried” in their name and packaging.
KFC is reportedly raising their chickens in their own factories in bad conditions.
It has been regarded as an urban legend that KFC breeds genetically modified chickens that are unfit for human consumption. Some reports say that conditions in their chicken factories are horrendous that the chickens turn out malnourished and in really bad shape.
They are allegedly using high levels of bad flavorings and ingredients.
KFC allegedly uses a lot of maltodextrin (a kind of sugar that can increase the risk of diabetes), highly refined salt, and monosodium glutamate or MSG. These can lead to high blood pressure, kidney problems, and poor brain functions.
Partially hydrogenated oils appear 36 times on KFC’s menu.
Fried food is bad – we already know that. KFC allegedly uses oils high in omega-6 fatty acids that can cause serious heart problems. Though they claim each serving of their food to have zero grams of trans fat, there are still small percentages in there, that when constantly consumed can be really bad for the health.
