If you’ve made mental stress a natural part of your everyday, it’s time to stop. When your mind is overworked and cluttered, it’s bound to affect your productivity and physical health. This is not how you’re designed to live. Bring back the joy of each day by decluttering your mind.
Focus on the task at hand
The ability to multi-task has been placed on the pedestal long enough. Reality is, you’re just not being wise with your time. Lifestyle guru Tim Ferriss recommends two to four hours of uninterrupted focused work to boost productivity. But the world has programmed you to juggle multiple tasks, constantly check your emails, and all the while think about next week’s meeting and tonight’s dinner (plus the laundry, pending bills, and that project for a new client). Rid yourself of all that baggage. Focus.
Cut down and throw away
Do you have activities that only promote unhealthy thinking habits? For instance, browsing through social networks is not bad in itself. But if it’s causing you to waste time, then maybe you should consider logging out. Or maybe there are some things in your life that aren’t even essential, but you’ve been holding on to. Eliminate those that need to go.
Stop being a control freak
“If I don’t do this, nothing will happen.” It’s highly frustrating when it seems that you’re the only one who can get the job done. But you also have to be discerning about when it’s time to let go of the reins. Distance yourself, delegate tasks that can be delegated, and allow some room for mistakes. You don’t have to run the show all the time.
Enjoy a physical activity
Walk, run, bike, swim, or hit the gym. Choose an exercise that fits your personality and lifestyle. Physical activities don’t only rejuvenate your body; they also give your mind a much-needed break.
Get enough rest
If you feel overworked, then you’re not getting enough R&R. Take a break when you feel your thoughts weighing you down, and prioritize getting enough sleep when the workday is done. Take advantage of those vacation leaves and other leave privileges. Go on a cruise, enjoy some alone time, and just rest.
Decluttering your thoughts requires intentional action. You don’t have to stay stuck in the daily grind of stress-filled days. You can decide to change your thoughts and your priorities right now.
